In November, EFSA published its “European Union summary report on surveillance for the presence of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) in 2023” (available at https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajournal/pub/9097 ). This report details the testing of approximately 950,000 cattle and 387,000 small ruminants. While no cases of classical BSE were detected, five atypical BSE cases were reported in France, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Spain (two in Spain). The majority of scrapie cases occurred in sheep (462 classical and 76 atypical), with fewer cases in goats (176 classical and 7 atypical). No cases of chronic wasting disease were detected in deer. Updated story maps and dashboards are also accessible through the TSE section of the EFSA website: https://www.efsa.europa.eu/it/topics/transmissible-spongiform-encephalopathies-tse
